Age of Thornvale — Shadows, Flesh & Law (Major Update)

This is the most human update Thornvale has ever had. Where the last update gave you ages to live through and a kingdom to rule, this one turns inward — to the daggers whispered in the dark, the people who remember every kindness and slight, the body that ages and bleeds and bears children, and the courts that will one day judge you. And the whole world now sounds and looks the part.

Six new pillars — all offline, all in the browser, all woven into the systems you already know.

🎵 A New Sound — Fully Medieval Music

The entire soundtrack has been rebuilt from the ground up to be authentically medieval, and it's still 100% generative WebAudio (no audio files, itch.io-friendly).

  • Church modes (Dorian, Phrygian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Ionian) instead of modern harmony.
  • A sustained drone / bourdon of open fifths beneath everything — the signature bed of medieval music.
  • Period instruments, synthesised: plucked lute & harp, breathy recorder & shawm pipes, bowed vielle, tabor drums, and plainchant voices for sacred settings.
  • Short modal phrases (estampie/saltarello-style dances, flowing airs, chant) rather than random notes — real melody that shifts with place, season and era.
  • Every location has its own colour: plainchant and drone in the church, a lively lute-and-tabor dance in the tavern, pipes in the market, trumpets in the castle, war-drums and horns in battle, a lone recorder in the forest.
  • Even the sound effects — level-ups, quests, victories — are now modal fanfares on lute and pipe.

🕯️ Pillar 1 — Intrigue & Shadows

Build a web of eyes in the dark and wage a whole second, silent war.

  • Recruit spies into a shadow network (with upkeep — a starved web withers).
  • Gather intelligence to uncover the secrets great houses and rivals would kill to hide: hidden bastards, heresy, treason, murder, affairs.
  • Blackmail those secrets — extort coin, or coerce a house into your will.
  • Order schemes: sabotage a rival's fortunes, purloin their gold, forge documents to bolster your own claims, or poison and assassinate the ones who stand in your way.
  • Every stroke risks exposure — a captured agent talks, the watch takes note, your name is stained.
  • And the shadows cut both ways: assassins in the night and blackmail threats will come for you.

🧑‍🤝‍🧑 Pillar 2 — Living People

The townsfolk are no longer a static list. They live, remember and change.

  • Take a trusted, accomplished friend as your mentor — they teach you their craft, granting skill day after day at their side.
  • Gossip spreads: your reputation warms near-strangers when it's bright, and sours them when it's black. The whole town has an opinion of you.
  • Bonds cross real milestones: a dearest friend becomes a lifelong confidant; a bitter grudge hardens into a sworn nemesis who plots harder and longer — until a reckoning forces the matter into the open, to be settled with steel, with schemes, or with a hard-won peace.

🩺 Pillar 3 — Body & Medicine

A hard life is written on the flesh.

  • Wounds of four severities from duels, battle and ambush — they heal with rest and doctoring, or fester into fever if left untended.
  • Grievous hurts can leave permanent scars (a limp, a stiff sword-arm, a lost eye) that follow you for life.
  • Visit the physician's house: tend wounds yourself with your medicine skill, buy poultices, physics and tonics, or submit to the brutal barber-surgeon's knife.
  • Chronic ailments of age — gout, a weak chest, failing sight, a ruined back — gather slowly over the years.
  • Vices can take hold — drink, dice, the poppy — gnawing at body and purse until you master them or give in.
  • Pregnancy & childbirth, with real medieval peril: children are now carried to term, and the birth itself is a dangerous hour for mother and child alike.

⚖️ Pillar 4 — Law & Justice

Crime finally has its day in court.

  • When your crimes mount, you're dragged before the bench to stand trial — and how you answer matters: plead your innocence, bribe the magistrate, demand trial by combat, submit to trial by ordeal (God's judgment), call a witness, or throw yourself on the court's mercy.
  • Punishments harden with the crime: fines, the gaol, mutilation — and the gallows for the worst.
  • Flee justice and become an outlaw — beyond the King's peace, hunted by bounty hunters on every road, until you win a royal pardon by coin or by service in the King's wars.
  • Rise high enough and you may sit as magistrate yourself, judging the accused with mercy, rigour, or graft — and earn a name as a just judge or a feared tyrant.

🌅 Pillar 5 — A World Alive

The world now breathes on screen.

  • A painterly, file-free atmospheric sky lies over every scene: the sun and moon wheel across the day, the seasons colour the light, rain, snow, clouds and stars drift past, and the great eras cast their pall (a green plague haze, a red shadow of war, the blue of a long winter).
  • The great turning points of a life are now framed as illuminated manuscripts — an ornamented event card with a golden glyph, tinted to the weight of the moment.

Under the hood

  • All new systems are fully saved and restored, with backward-compatible migration for existing saves.
  • Extensive automated tests for every pillar, plus a long-run audit of 10 lives × 200 in-game years (96,000 game-days) with all invariants holding and zero anomalies.
  • Everything remains offline and browser-only — no servers, no files, itch.io-ready.

Go make your name — and guard your back.
